Ciqikou Ancient Town Chongqing

Ciqikou Ancient Town Chongqing
A number of old courtyard compounds still stand here. Small as it is, the town used to have several temples, and one of them, Taoism temple, had been turned into an elementary school. The folk culture still sends forth their charms after having experienced a long history. So, it is of great practical importance to conduct integral conservation to Ciqikou. However, at present Ciqikou has been challenged by the problems of deteriorating natural environment, protruding contradictions between traditional living environment and modern life style, serious aging and damages of traditional buildings. This paper aims at these problems and proposes some feasible principles for conservation and renovation of Ciqikou historic district. What makes the school special is one of its students. Oh, a small class room, small stool and desk, oil lamp, blackboard, and a picture of Doctor Sun Yetsan, that's the custom of the time. Nobel Prize Winner Samuel CC Ding, in Chinese we know him as Ding Zhaozhong once studied here. That's his seat. Hmm, he must be a very good student when he was here. Well, it's kind of late for me to start the quest for Nobel Prize. The old town has only two main streets and they've been taken up by all kinds of shops. The teahouse puts on a diverse range of entertainment with shows staged from time to time. And this is the famous Sichuan show, 'Changing the face'. The biggest secret is how the performer changes his masks. In this performance, he has to switch masks something like nine times. It's such a difficult trick that sometimes it does not work, but the audience will always forgive him. There was an old show in Sichuan called Nine Changes and this is from that show. There was a knight-errant called Baiyong who is brings hope to many poor unfortunate people. And when he shows up, he changes his masks nine times. It's a way of indicating that he will help people, but not ask anything in return. He doesn't let people know who he is. Today it's purely a show of skill. It was really a charming quiet place with transitional Chinese folk culture and construction. You would enjoy the quiet relax and release form the noisy city completely. Jiefangbei Business Area at Chongqing |
Thought the time was running out, the history traces still left for people to remember. Jiefangbe, which stands in the most prosperous downtown of Chongqing is not only the symbol of civilization, but also the evidence for history of half century. Jiefangbe, or the People' s Liberation Monument, formerly known as the Monument of Victory in the War of Resistance, a 27.5 meter high structure, was renamed and had its new name inscribed by Liu Bocheng on October 1st, 1950. This drab clock tower is to celebrate the Communists' liberation of the city from seventy years of colonial and right-wing occupation. It is the Center of the city marked as Chongqing's commercial heart. It isolated by a broad, paved pedestrian square and glassy offices. The shopping square, completed at the end of 1997, is 400 meters from east to west, and 350 meters from north to south, covering an area of 24,400 square meters. Around the square there are more than 3,000 stores and shops of various kinds, with two dozen large malls and shopping centers, a dozen star-grade hotels, and over 300 establishments and offices such as banks, stock markets, postal and telecommunication services and places for entertainment. The area is packed with noisy, well-dressed crowds investigating the latest imports piled high at the several department stores, flitting between restaurants, and blithely disregarding the signs asking them not to litter. Nearby backstreets are busy, too: narrow pavements congested with bright, cheap clothing stalls, and the city market around Bayi Lu full of buckets of frogs, cages of snakes - which vendors laughingly invite you to handle - and huge, fragrant bags of dried spices and fungi. More than 300,000 people visit this area every day on the average, and on holidays the figure may exceed 900,000. This is the busiest part of downtown Chongqing. When you stand before the monument and look up the straight of the body, you may hear the old history. It enough Chongqing people to work hard and create new life. |

Fengdu Ghost City | ||||||
There are 75 Buddha and Tao temples in the town of Fengdu, most of them gathered on a famous hill named Ming Mountain. Legends said that Ming Mountain is one of the 72 graveyards for Taoism. Tao believes when people die, their spirits will gather there (also called "spirit world"). All the temples on the hill were built at Western Jin period (265 ~ 420A.D.) and rebuilt in Ming and Ch'ing Dynasty (1386 ~ 1911A.D.). Fengdu is the only ghost city in China. The temples are all over the mountain with many statues. In the "spirit world", there are series of super beings in the temples. They all have its own responsibility, they guard the spirit world. The days, from March 3 to 15th of the lunar month, are Fengdu peoples' lively temple fair days. During the days, there will be a lot of interesting "spirit shows" in the streets attracting many tourists and believers. Fengdu has a great country forest park "Shuang Gui Shan"; Guiwang stone carving, one of the fineness in the world; this place has the most Han tombs (old graves from 206B.C. ~ 219A.D.) in China. Therefore, when you traveling theThree Gorges of Yangtze River, Fengdu is a place you do not want to ignore. It is also said that Fengdu gained its reputation from two super beings - Wang Fangping and Yin Changsheng. They all lived at Han Dynasty (206B.C. ~ 219A.D.) and became super beings one day in Pingdushan of Fengdu. Their magic stories attracted many believers. They merged their families names, - Yin Wang, it means the "ruler of hell". Therefore, in peoples' mind, Fengdu became a mystical and terrible place of spirits. Li Bai, the great poet of Tang Dynasty wrote this in his poem: "it is interesting that all the people will be a citizen of Fengdu one day".

the Residence of General Joseph W. Stilwell
If you have time, , 4.5 about kilometres southeast of the downtown is worthwhile a visit. General Joseph Warren Stilwell (1883-1946) General Joseph Warren Stilwell was chief commander of US forces in the China-Burma-India Theatre during World War II. In 1942, ranked as a major general, he was dispatched to CBI and was regarded as the best field commander in the entire United States Army. General Stilwell was a true friend of the Chinese people as well as a Chinese linguist. He first came to China on Nov. 23, 1911, not long after the Qing Dynasty was overthrown, and paid a visit to Shanghai, Guangzhou, Xiamen and Wuzhou for seventeen days. He came back for a second time in Aug 1920 as the first language instructor of the US Army in China. Between 1921 and 1922, he worked as Chief Engineer of road construction in Shanxi and Shaanxi province. On one of his journeys to the north-eastern part of the country, General Stilwell witnessed the civil war between warlords over the land. He also sensed out the superiority of the Japanese over other races in that area. One year later, his four-year term of office in China expired. In Aug 1926, he visited China for a third time and served first as Battalion Commander, then Acting Chief of Staff of the 15th Infantry of the US Army in Tianjin. Just one month before the inauguration of the general in Tianjin, Northern Expedition was launched under the joint action of the Nationalist and Communist Parties. Stilwell was sent to the battlefield in Nanjing and Shanghai. This time, he got a further understanding of the turbulent China. In 1928, at the age of forty-five, Stilwell was raised to lieutenant and, in August of the next year, he left his post in China and returned to the States. His fourth visit to China was in Jan 1935. This time, he was named Military Attache to the US Legation in China and had interviews with Zhou Enlai, the representative of the CPC and Mrs. Chiang Kai-shek. From 1935, the Japanese precipitated its invasion into China and in 1937, Japan officially declared war on China and the nationwide Anti-Japanese War started. General Stilwell managed a loan of twenty-five million dollars for China granted by the American government. However, in the middle of 1939, he had to go back home after the expiry of his service. On 5 May 1942, the general came to China for fifth time. He stayed in Chongqing and served as the US Army Commander of the CBI Theatre while supervising the implementation of Lend-Lease in CBI. Mr. Chiang-Kai-shek appointed him as Chief of Staff of the China Theatre under the Allied Army. In early 1942, he led the Chinese troops fighting strenuously against the Japanese invaders in Burma. After the Allies' defeat, the general organized the retreat of the Chinese, American and British forces to India. There he helped training the Chinese troops. Between March and June of 1944, the general commanded the Sino-US Army to fight against the Japanese in the north of Burma and they won the battle. Afterwards, Stilwell was promoted to a four-star general. While preparing the counteroffensive into Burma, he directed the project of road construction via Ledo, India, Burma to Yunnan. The road was open to traffic in 1945 and it was named after Stilwell. When staying in China, Stilwell kept in contact with Zhou Enlai through the political advisor Davis. He detested the corrupt government of the Nationalist Party led by Chiang-Kai-shek, for whose passive resistance against the Japanese and active fighting with the communists. All this resulted in a serious disagreement between Mr. Chiang and the general. US President Roosevelt recalled him in 1944. In refusal of the award conferred by Chiang-Kai-shek on Oct. 20, General Stilwell decided to leave Chongqing. Before his leave, he paid a farewell call to Mrs. Song Qingling, the wife of Dr. Sun Yat-sen and sent a farewell telegram to Zhou Enlai.
