Located on a typical busy street in the Dongsi area, passersby are attracted by a large signboard over a shop proclaiming dalian huoshao in four gold characters and a pair of wooden couplets flanking the doorway.

Dongjie Xiyuan specializes in Dalian huoshao, a Beijing-style pot sticker, or fried dumpling, that looks somewhat like a fat stick of butter. The reason why it's called dalian huoshao, instead of the guotie, as pots stickers are usually known, is because it resembles the old cloth purse (dalian) that Beijing people once wore over the shoulder or around the waist. Huoshao means baked bread.The fillings offered here include a combination of minced pork with scallion, chives, fennel, or hyacinth bean; beef with green pepper; lamb with gourd; or vegetarian. Orders are priced by weight, 3.5RMB/50grams, with a minimum order of 100grams.

There is also a wide array of other typical Beijing fare, such as madoufu (mashed mungbean), chaogan (liver in thick sauce), jiemodun (cabbage in mustard sauce), zha gezhi (mungbean “fries”), zha guanchang (fried “sausage”), suanni qiezi (mashed eggplant with garlic), and other home-style dishes.

The names of 43 dishes in three categories (old Beijing, cold and home-style) are squeezed on to the restaurants name card. Zhou Lining, the 32-year-old owner, who looks half her age, seems too young to have opened a place specializing in traditional Beijing food. But as a descendant of a Manchu yellow banner family, she grew up eating this type of traditional local cuisine, and had a dream to open a restaurant serving the fast disappearing old Beijing favorites. She quit her bookkeeping job and joined a friend to open Dongjie Xiyuan.

Ms. Zhou modestly admitted that her chef needs to work a bit more on the pot stickers, and Time Out agrees that there's room for improvement. The dalian huoshao sampled here are good, but could be a bit crispier.

We applaud her ambitious effort to promote many of Beijing's old favorites, some of which--like hutongs and courtyard houses--are on the verge of extinction.
