Excelling in just one cuisine is difficult enough for a restaurant to pull off; a place such as Golden Jaguar—which tries to be authentically Japanese, Southeast Asian, Western, and Chinese all at once—has clearly bitten off more than it can chew. The international fare served here is a mix of roast beef, sushi, German sausages, Indian curry, and pasta. If that’s not enough to make you sick, ladle on some bland Southeast Asian curries that tastes as if it’s straight out of the packet. The only reason—and it is a good one--to visit the Golden Jaguar is for their incredible Cantonese seafood buffet: tiger crabs, shrimps, scallops, oysters, yellow croaker, grouper, sea bass, mackerel, sword fish, yellow tail, tuna, bloody clams, octopus, salmon, and snapper – all for 180 RMB. Point to your choice of dish from the huge selection of chilled seafood and tell the staff how you’d like it prepared. The tiger crab cooked jiaoyan style (salt and pepper) is fantastic, reminiscent of the cuisine of Hong Kong’s outlying islands. The scallops steamed with black beans and garnished with chives are moist, juicy, and retain the bean’s salty flavor. The fish fillet was smooth and tender yet firm, sautéed in XO sauce. Each dish is cooked on the spot and served steaming hot. Golden Jaguar is located on Donganmen Dajie and the cooked-to-order-feel of the restaurant is not a million miles away from that of the Wangfujing night market outside. The interior’s brightly-lit marble floors give it the anonymous atmosphere of an upscale canteen, but it does have a buzz about it, with cooks hovering over food stations and attentive staff constantly maneuvering between tables. Fish fans in the north of the city should head to their Yayuncun location. Buffet 180RMB per person for lunch and after 8pm, 220RMB per person for dinner (5-8pm).
